FAQs

What happened to the name Students Helping Honduras?

Our name has officially changed to One Thousand Schools. Students Helping Honduras began with a group of college students in Virginia, but throughout the years, more and more people from all walks of life have joined us. The new name provides a more inclusive and accurate representation of our community, supporters, and original mission.

What is the process for joining?

It's not much of a process to be honest. Just join our GroupMe and show up to our meetings and events! We meet every Wednesday from 7-8 PM in the basement of the Reckord Armory.

When and where are your meetings?

We meet every Wednesday from 7-8 PM in the basement of the Reckord Armory. The address is 4490 Rossborough Ln, College Park, MD 20742. All are welcome and there is normally food!

Do I need to speak Spanish to join SHH?

Definitely not! Although a few can, many of our members can't. When we travel to Honduras there will always be someone around who can translate for you, whether that be a staff member or one of us.

How much does the trip to Honduras cost?

The trip costs $650 per person, not including airfare. Round trip airfare typically costs between $350-600.  However, there are easy ways to reduce your cost!

Is there any way to reduce the cost of my trip?

Yes, you can earn discounts on your trip price by fundraising! Raise $1,000 and your cost is reduced to $375, raise $2,000 and you only have to pay for airfare! We will keep track of your total funds raised throughout the year, crediting you for direct donations on your behalf as well as the chapter-wide fundraisers you help out with.

How can I get even more involved?

If you're already coming to our meetings and events and want to do more with One Thousand Schools, you definitely can. First off, consider running to be part of our Exec team when elections are held in November. There are also opportunities for additional involvement with the national organization. You can apply to be a student director, volunteer in Honduras at the VSBS summer camp, or (for those who are/will be on Exec) participate in Leadership Week.

What is the process for becoming part of Exec?

We hold elections every November and members serve a spring-fall term! You cannot serve on Exec your last semester before graduating.
